Online and offline business operate on different premises. The product is the key in offline where as keyword is the key in online. When you have a store with a bunch of products, people walk by step into your store and browse your products and buy what they need, or what they like. But it is not the same online. Any easy website builder should teach you this immediately. Online people do not know you exist. There are million of websites selling all kinds of products and service. People cannot see you like a store in the mall.
When people want some thing online, they go to their computer and type a few words of what they are looking for. They are pretty specific in what they want even before they sit before a computer. Here is how this works. They say, ‘I need an oven and I going shopping online to find what am out there.’
Now how will they find you? They are going to type in ‘ovens’ and many sites come up on the screen. They see the first page first. And then if what they want is not on the first page they will go to the second page. Remember each page lists at least 10 sites. So if the first ten pages do not show what you need then only they will go to the next 10 sites.
I hope you get the picture now. So it is very likely most of the time that they will find what they want in the first 10 sites. If you are not listed in the first 10 sites or second 10 sites, people will never see you or the products you sell. How are going to accomplish ranking first when there are hundreds and thousand of sites competing for that position?
You need to understand this basic concept before you can start making any money online. That brings us to the topic of keywords. So you need to master the fine art of choosing the right keywords to represent your website.
It is not important what you sell. It may be to you but if you want to sell it, you must know what people are searching for. Determine if you are product has any demand. The keyword will tell you that. Find the closest keyword searched to your product or service.
Then find out how many people are searching for it. You also must find out how many others are providing products and services using that same keyword. Then there is your competition. This is just the tip of the iceberg in basic building blocks before you build your website.
